What America should learn from Dr. Conrad Murray’s role in Michael Jackson’s death
Dr. Conrad Murray was released from prison today, just two years into his four-year sentence for the involuntary manslaughter of Michael Jackson in June 2009. Jackson died from an overdose of the powerful anesthetic propofol, which Murray had given Jackson to help him sleep.
Though Murray’s medical license has been suspended or revoked in three states, he has vowed to appeal his case, causing some to wonder whether it’s possible for the 60-year-old former cardiologist to ever be licensed to practice again.
In theory, the answer is, ‘Yes,’ but only if Murray’s conviction was overturned. And according to recent reports, an appeals court has questioned whether it needs to hear the case.
Though I doubt that Murray’s attempt at an appeal will be successful, I mentioned his case because Murray represents a very sad chapter in medical history. What is his legacy as a physician? Not contributing to the well-being of his patients, or making any significant medical discoveries, but rather, being convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
Recently, Fox News Health has covered numerous stories about the epidemic of prescription drug abuse in the United States, including the Food and Drug Adminstration’s (FDA) recently proposed restrictions on the highly addictive painkiller hydrocodone.
Drugs like these are quickly becoming the leading cause of addiction for millions of Americans. In fact, deaths resulting from overdoses on prescription painkillers increased five-fold between 1999 and 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
At the heart of this epidemic are many doctors, like Murray, who have failed to pay attention to the risks of these medications. They have provided prescriptions without regard to the consequences that drugs like opoid painkillers can have for patients.
I hope that health care providers re-familiarize themselves with the story of Dr. Conrad Murray and glean from it, an important lesson that as physicians, we all must remember; “First, do no harm.”
I shudder to think there is a chance that Murray may laugh himself all the way to the bank if he is paid millions of dollars to write a book and tell his side of the story – but unfortunately, these days, that is not too far-fetched.
The real story here is that physicians cannot be passive bystanders when dealing with individuals who do not realize the dangers of drug abuse, or they too could end up jailed and disgraced – like Murray.
Jackson’s life had a tragic ending, and the people who surrounded him should have known better than to allow him to abuse drugs like propofol – especially the medical professionals who were supposed to be looking out for him.

Nollywood Actor, Jide Kosoko’s Daughter, Bidemi Disgraced In Ibadan
In case you didn’t know, one of the Nollywood actor, Prince Jide Kosoko’s daughter, Bidemi Kosoko is presently a youth corp member at Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria.
However, many of her fellow corp members are currently complaining about her snobbish attitude and what some of them have termed has arrogance.
According to impeccable sources, whenever some of the other corp members who have seen her movies approach her just to say ‘Hi’, Bidemi has away of looking down on them.
“I don’t know if Bidemi’ doesn’t understand that as a celebrity you should be polite to people, since she began her service close to a year now, many people at the Community Development Service(CDS) have been avoiding her due to her arrogant attitude.
The one everyone witnessed recently was this woman who is a Batch A corp member. She doesn’t know her attitude, so she went to her and she was like ‘Sister, please it’s like I have seen your face before,’but to this woman’s disappointment, Bidemi just looked at the woman from head to toe and walked away,” the source said.
We were also told that because of her celebrity status, Bidemi also expects to get preferential treatments at her Community Development Service(CDS). According to what another source told us, Bidemi who was posted to Ibadan North Local Government recently came late for her clearance but was trying to jump queue, but not giving a dime about her status or her father’s, her Local Government Inspector(LGI) Mrs. Ologundudu, a no-nonsense woman told her point blank to go and join the queue. This really caused her so many shame and embarrassment.

Senate Cancels N4 Billion Budget For First Lady’s Building
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Smart Adeyemi, stated this on Wednesday, while confirming that the Senate had passed the Abuja budget for 2013.
He said the proposed N4 billion for construction of the first ladies mission building in Africa was distributed to critical needs in satellite towns. He said the money to be spent on the mission building could not be approved due to litigation on the proposed land.
Mr Adeyemi said the Senate could not appropriate funds for a land that was not available.
He said, “It is worthy of note that the proposed appropriation for the construction of the building for First Ladies Mission in Africa has been distributed to meet pressing needs in the area of engineering and Satellite towns.
“Furthermore, due to litigation in respect of the proposed plot of land, the money cannot be accessed this year. Also, we cannot appropriate for a land that is not available.”
An Abuja court had ruled that the land proposed by the FCT ministry for the first ladies’ building belonged to an organisation owned by Turai Yar’Adua, after a protracted muddy legal battle.
The Abuja Minister, Bala Mohammed, had revoked the choice land from Mrs. Yar’Adua’s organisation and given it to first ladies’ mission; a decision the court upturned.
Senators had in January described as “scandalous” the N4 billion budgets contained in the FCT 2013 budget which was unanimously passed on Wednesday.
The Senate approved a N259, 649,520,705 budgets for the FCT for 2013, with a surplus of N48, 716,036.
The FCT’s 2013 approved budget has N48,600,837,245 voted for personnel costs; N50,581,234,058 for overhead costs and the balance of N160,467, 499,402 is for capital projects for the service of the FCT commencing from January 1 and ending on December 31, 2013.

PDP’s Crises Worsen, More Govs To Go
The war of attrition rocking the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, across Nigeria, worsened Wednesday when it claimed another high profile casualty. The victim is the Sokoto State Governor Dr. Aliyu Wamakko, who was suspended by the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party over what it described as anti-party activity.
Wamakko’s suspension followed that of the Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, in the wake of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum election during which he trounced the party’s anointed candidate Jona Jang of Plateau State. And since then the governors’ forum has remained fractured, with the two governors laying claim to the chairmanship of the forum.
The National Working Committee of the PDP announced the suspension of Wamakko in a statement after it rose from its 338th meeting in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. The NWC added that the issue has been referred to the disciplinary committee of the party for further action.
One of the reasons given for the governor’s suspension is that he failed to honour the NWC’s invitation.
The statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, reads in part: “The National Working Committee (NWC) at its 338th meeting held on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, extensively discussed the state of the party across the nation and its members as well as the repeated breaches and disregard to the party’s constitution by his excellency, Dr. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, the executive governor of Sokoto State.
“The NWC notes that on several occasions, Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko had ignored invitations and lawful directives of the NWC in this regard and has continued to show complete apathy to the affairs of the party and contempt to an organ of the party.
“This is in furtherance of the determination of the leadership of the party to enforce discipline at all levels.”
Wamakko is said to have rejected the selection of Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom state as chairman of the newly formed PDP Governors’ Forum. It was formed to weaken the influential NGF headed by Governor Amaechi, who is in the bad books of the Presidency.
Sources said more heads will still roll as the governors of Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa and Niger states are likely to be suspended for similar reasons.
These are PDP governors that backed Amaechi, instead of the candidate of the party, Jona Jang, during the 24 May Nigeria Governors’ Forum contentious election.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, may also get the same dose of the bitter pill for allegedly hobnobbing with leaders of the opposition parties.
Most chapters of the PDP in the states are in turmoil. In Rivers, Ogun, Lagos and other states, the party has been polarised as entrenched interests seek to control the party’s machinery at the state level.
Attempts by the National Chairman of the party, Bamanga Tukur to reconcile the warring factions of the party in the states proved futile as the crises worsen by the day.
Meanwhile, some politicians in Sokoto State on Thursday expressed support for Governor Aliyu Wamakko after he was suspended by the National Working Committee (NWC) of Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) on Wednesday.
Alhaji Muktari Mapia, the party’s Deputy Treasurer in the state, on Thursday expressed surprise over the suspension order, saying the NWC should rather work out a political formula that would strengthen internal democracy in the party.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto, Mapia described the NWC’s action as obnoxious
He said “the party badly needs internal democracy to confront the opposition come 2015 rather than suspending a faithful and loyal member who has contributed positively towards the development of the party.
“It is only Sokoto State where all the councillors, local government chairmen, House of Assembly members, House of Representatives and Senate members belong to the same political party.”
Mapia said the electorate in the state belonged to PDP based on political structures put in place by Wamakko.
“Any party that Gov. Wamakko chooses to go, we will be fully behind him because he has demonstrated to be a good leader that has the interest of our people at heart,” he said.
Mapia called on members of the NWC not to allow themselves to be “deceived by some unscrupulous Abuja-based politicians who hail from the state and cannot win in a polling unit”.
He said that the exemplary leadership of Wamakko had made it possible for the people to enjoy the dividends of democracy.
Also, Alhaji Abdullahi Bafarawa, a PDP chieftain in the state described Wamakko’s suspension order as a big joke.
“The national chairman of party has allowed the Abuja politicians who have nothing to offer to deceive him in taking that decision,” he said.
Bafarawa said that the opposition was watching the development, adding that the action posed a threat to the party come 2015.
“All hands should be geared towards political reconciliation among faithful members so as to confront the opposition,” he said.
He called on the party’s supporters to remain calm as Wamakko was “a leader that wishes all well in the politics of development of the state and the country at large”.
The Chairman of PDP in Sokoto North Local Government Area, Alhaji Muhammadu Dangoggo, expressed dismay over the action of the NWC, saying: “we are fully in the party because of Wamakko and we will follow him anywhere he goes.
Dangoggo said “only God gives and takes leadership and He will do so in 2015 and beyond.”
An opposition politician, Alhaji Ibrahim Chika, said “we in the opposition will welcome Wamakko into our fold with open arms if he decides to ditch PDP and join our party.”

JTF Uncovers More Arms Cache in Kano
The Joint Military Task Force yesterday uncovered a fresh weapons cache at No 3 Gaya Road, Bompai, Kano.
The fresh discovery was made at the same location, where a bunker stocked with arms and ammunition believed to belong to the Hezbollah terrorist organisation, was uncovered last week.
Three Lebanese nationals were arrested in connection with the discovery.
This was contained in a statement by the spokesman for 3 Brigade Nigerian Army, Captain Ikedichi Iweha.
The statement was made available to journalists in Kano.
Iweha said a further search on the Bungalow led to another astonishing discovery of dangerous weapons buried under a wardrobe.
The statement read in part, “After painstaking search of the whole premises, the search team uncovered an underground bunker in the master bedroom where a large quantity of assorted weapons of different types and caliber and ammunition, which were properly wrapped, was recovered.
“On further search of the property, a cooler was recovered buried under the wardrobe which had in it 80 indicators, five PPK pistols, 334 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, nine magazines, 4 pistol silencers, 18 caps of 36 hand grenades , four explosive fuses and two explosive devices.”

Senate Rejects State Creation, Rotational Presidency
Two contentious political issues, state creation and rotational presidency, have been rejected by the Senate.
In its report on the review of the 1999 constitution submitted Wednesday, the Senate Committee on the Review of the Constitution disclosed that none of the 61 requests for state creation satisfied the provision for the creation of a new state in the constitution.
According to the committee, more of those requests coupled with the entire provision of section 8(1) which states: “An act of the National Assembly for the purpose of creating a new state shall only be passed if: (a) a request, supported by at least two-third majority of members (representing the area demanding the creation of the new state) in each of the following namely, (i) the Senate and the House of Representatives (ii) the House of Assembly in respect of the area and (iii) the local government councils in respect of the area, is received by the National Assembly; (b) a proposal for the creation of the state is thereafter approved in a referendum by at least two-third majority of the people of the area where the demand for the creation of the state originated; (c) the result of the referendum is then approved by a simple majority of all the states of the federation supported by a simple majority of members of the Houses of Assembly; and (d) the proposal is approved by a resolution passed by two-thirds majority of members of each House of the National Assembly.”
The committee also rejected rotation of executive offices on the grounds that the constitution should not make Nigerian leadership subject to ethnic or regional considerations.
It added that the matter should be a matter of consideration among the various political parties.
On foreign accounts, the senate committee recommended that the prohibition of foreign accounts as contained in section 3 of Part 1 of the fifth schedule of the constitution should be maintained. “Making any alteration is most likely to be received with misgivings and outrage by Nigerians as it may portray the National Assembly as self serving,” it added.

GEJ swears in new Power, Defence ministers
President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday swore in Chinedu Osita Nebo (Enugu) and Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (Kebbi) as ministers into the Federal Executive Council to replace Barth Nnaji (Power) and Haliru Bello Mohammed (Defence) respectively. Nnaji and Mohammed had earlier exited the cabinet last year.
President Jonathan told the new ministers that Nigerians would judge his coaching abilities by the new innovations they would bring into the federal cabinet.
“We are admitting two new ministers into our fold. From the profile we have heard about them they are eminently qualified to serve this country at all levels. If it is in politics they are eminently qualified to serve as Councillors to the president of the federal republic by their antecedents.
“But then background qualification is one thing but serving as a minister is another thing because the challenges are different.
“One thing I believe is that you will succeed but to me it is a big challenge to me and you because if a coach of a football team sends his 11 players and decide to make changes getting close to half time then he knows that there may be weaknesses in some areas and he is bringing people to strengthen the team to make sure they score goals.
“So Nigerians are expecting that if I am bringing ministers in at this time, I must be bringing people that will strengthen the team and make sure I bring people that will score more goals than we are already scoring. And If Nigerians don’t realise that they will feel that I am not a good coach.
“If they realise that then they will know I am a good coach. So is quite challenging for me for bringing you in at that time and also to you because they will expect you to perform extremely well.
“Just like when the coach introduces a new player sometimes 10 minutes to the end of the game and you are introduced to the field they expect you to score the next goal.
“So you are welcome on board you will be formerly inaugurated again on Wednesday when we will have the FEC meeting. You will get your letter from the SGF and I sign you to where we think you will serve at this great country. Congratulations”.

Over 50 feared dead in Nigeria pipeline explosion
Over 50 people are reported to have been killed in an attempt to siphon fuel from a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipeline at Arepo village in Ogun State, Nigeria, on January 12. The pipeline supplies petrol from Atlas Cove Jetty in Lagos to other locations in South-West Nigeria.
NNPC had to shut the pipeline, potentially causing series shortages across the region.
According to the Sunday Vanguard, the explosion was caused by a bullet striking the ruptured pipeline after an argument between two of the ‘vandals’ attempting to siphon the petrol led to one opening fire with a rifle.
Members of the Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit of the Police Special Task Force responded to the explosion and arrested a number of the survivors, including one who is reported to have participated in the killing of three NNPC officials last year in Arepo village.
Other survivors were reported to have escaped by boat through the maze of creeks and waterways near the village

Gunmen Attack Governor Jang’s Village
There was pandemonium at Du village in Jos south local government of Plateau state, north central Nigeria, on Wednesday as some gunmen attacked a ranch in the village killing two people on the spot. Eyewitnesses say the gunmen stormed the ranch in the village early this morning, firing sporadically into the air. The Governor of Plateau state, Jonah Jang, is reportedly to be from Du village.
According to the Jos south management committee chairman, Peter Dung, the gunmen got to the village in a Hi-Lux vehicle, and bolted away when they failed to gain access into the ranch.
Mr. Dung maintained that no security operatives arrived at the scene before the gunmen disappeared, which forced the villagers to troop out to protest the killings and the invasion.
However, men of the special task force in the state arrived the village after the incident had occurred leaving the attackers to escape.
some suspects were arrested, mostly youths who came out to defend their village.
The special task force while addressing the press through its media officer, Captain Salisu Mustahpa denied the position that two people died during the attack adding that men of the command only arrested nine suspects in connection with the incident.
He pointed out that the command received a distress call through one of the recently launched emergency telephone numbers to the general public in relation to sporadic gunshots around Du, Shenabe and Bisichi villages in Jos south local government area of plateau state.
Captain Mustapha claim the men of the command combed the area and arrested nine suspects in four different cars with dangerous weapons adding that preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects acquired the weapons from various sources within Plateau state.
He stated that the suspects claimed they exchanged gunfire with some gunmen who came to rustle cows in Du village and it was in the process of ambushing the gunmen that they were arrested.

2013 will be better than 2012 but... - Adeboye •2013: Volatile, rebellious year - Olukoya •Judgment year for politicians - TB Joshua
THE General Overseer, Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said that the New Year will be better than 2012, just as he said that Nigerians must pray fervently over some issues.
Pastor Adeboye added that the Federal Government must learn from past floods and major disasters witnessed in the country last year and take decisive precautions to avert a repeat, otherwise the country might be plagued with another set of major disasters.
Also, except prayers are intensified, prominent Nigerians may lose their lives just as it happened last year.
These and more were the prophecies Pastor Adeboye rolled out during the crossover service held at the Redemption Camp, Kilometre 46, Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, in the wee hours of Tuesday.
In a well-attended service by prominent people like Evangelists Mike and Gloria Bamiloye, among others, Adeboye, who mounted the pulpit at few minutes past 11.00 p.m. to speak on the topic: “Preparing for Signs and Wonders” said, 2013 would however, be a year of signs and wonders and would be better than 2012.
“The prayers of some of you minimised death of prominent Nigerians in the last year, so don’t stop praying in 2012,” he noted.
Adeboye, who enjoined Christians to intensify their worship, praises, prayers and devotion unto God to access breakthroughs for this year, said concerning Nigeria that at the count of the sixth month of the year, many will say “hope rising.”
For individuals, the man of God said although there may be temporary setbacks in the lives of people, God would eliminate them and speak peace to storms in people’s lives as well as make their stars shine brighter in the New Year.
Generally, he said God said 2013 would be better than 2012 in all facets.
On the international scene, Pastor Adeboye, popularly referred to as Daddy G.O, also stated that besides major breakthrough in Medicine promised in the New Year, God told him that nations that have promulgated and governed by “unholy laws should expect a taste of God’s divine fury this year, even as he warned that weather conditions may get worse if prayers are not intensified.
According to him, intensive intercessions are needed to prevent death of prominent world leaders in office, as well as booby traps set for world famous church leaders.
“The Lord says prominent world leaders need lots of prayers so as not to die in office. He says prominent church leaders all over the world need prayers against planned scandals,” Adeboye disclosed.
The crossover service, which ended at about 2.30 a.m, saw wife of Pastor Adeboye, Folu, before the close of the previous year, leading eminent wives of senior pastors, all clad in white and green traditional attire, rendering special thanksgiving songs to God.

2013: Volatile, rebellious year - Olukoya
By: Friday Ekeoba- Lagos
Notwithstanding the surge in violence in some parts of the country, the year 2013 has been described as one which Nigerians and even the government should approach with all known caution, as it will be full of human rebellion.
Also, the year will be inundated with mysterious happenings, disintegration and deception in high places, natural disaster and economic famine for the unrighteous and financial breakthrough for the righteous.
General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, Dr Daniel Olukoya made these remarks as part of the prophetic outlook for the year in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to him, while believers must be prayerful because of the violent nature of the year, he noted that two crucial things they must do is to pray that they should meet those whom God wants them to meet in the course of the year, and not to come across those whom God does not want them to meet.
Olukoya, who described the year as that of ‘fresh oil, and distinctive shining’ for members of the church, said 2013 is “A volatile year. Very short tempered, that is why I call it a fragile balloon. It is a dangerous year not to toy with.”
He said the year will serve as a year where there will be confusion in countries, among politicians and where organised destroyers will split and begin to destroy themselves.
Olukoya, who cautioned actors and actresses in the entertainment industry to engage in serious prayers, noted that this is necessary to avert debt and death that may ravage the industry in the year, due to some satanic covenant most of them have entered into unknowingly.
He also said, “it will be a year of horrible sinfulness; dangerous year to play with sin; unusually turbulent year; uncommon lawlessness; a year special prayers is needed in fragile areas of the world; a year of rage of waters and seas against ungodly nations and people; a year of shaking against nations that support lawlessness; unbelievable betrayers; prayers are needed to arrest civil war in many places; a year of resurgence of wickedness; uncommon destruction for the sexually pervert.”
Judgment year for politicians - TB Joshua

General Overseer of The Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Prophet T.B Joshua has described 2013 as a year of judgment for politicians who rode to power on the crest of people’s support and later abandoned the same people, warning them to pray against death and sickness.
Joshua, in his prophecies for nations, continents and political leaders, said such politicians, especially those who got to power through the support of youths, would become helpless in the New Year and experience a plummet in their finances in addition to being traumatised by sicknesses, diseases and death.
This is just as he said prominent nouveau riche and famous people in the country would suffer the same fate this year.
“I am seeing great, famous, popular and rich men and politicians will become helpless in matter of sickness, disease, finances, death. One of the causes: they have failed to reward those who helped them to succeed.
“This is the year of judgment, especially for politicians who use youths to support their political ambitions without reward after winning power. Tell your neighbour: reward those who help you succeed now,” he said.
The cleric also predicted that there would be an upscale of natural disasters as well as increase in air and sea crashes, saying that those who move closer to God in the New Year would be spared the calamities.
It will not be an all gloomy outlook for the year as the cleric said those into sale of foodstuffs and practising farming would experience a boom in their businesses, adding that God had anointed these businesses to provide solution to economic depression
